Classic French Provincial Furniture Styles
For hues typical of French provincial furniture, we offer three beautifully-rendered finishes:
Chateau White
Valbone Cream
Portofino Grey
Chateau White provides a finish that is typical of French provincial furniture. Chateau White is a low-gloss, almost matt coating that has been slightly stressed and aged with a scumble glaze for a subtle off-white finish.
A richer hue, Valbone Cream is another well-known finish typical of French provincial furniture. To attain this colour, several layers of white and cream are applied to the piece. We then rub through on the normal wear areas, allowing white and cream to be exposed in different layers to attain depth and visual texture. We finally apply a glaze an antiquing glaze to simulate years of wax polishing.
The classic Portofino Grey is achieved through painting layers of white, deep azure, cream and a final layer of subtle grey. As with the Valbone range, this is then rubbed through to lightly expose layers, simulating years of refinishing and wear for a truly antique appearance. A final layer of antiquing glaze is applied to further age the piece and blend the layers and colours together.
Dramatic Finishes
The later Neoclassical style developed as a direct contrast to the earlier popularity of pastels, curved lines and asymmetry. Straighter lines, darker colours and gilded veneers became popular in the late 18th century, particularly with the ushering in of the Napoleonic period.
Mahogany By Hand’s dramatic finishes for French reproduction furniture include Moulin Noir and Versailles. We have also created a range of Venetian Mirrors, allowing you to dramatically bring light and depth to any room.
Designed to simulate the look of Ebony, Moulin Noir-finished French reproduction furniture is extremely popular in modern homes, blending traditional style with modern décor.
Versailles gilded pieces are painstakingly applied with gold leaf in the traditional manner. This is then sealed with orange shellac and aged using a range of walnut glazes or grey glazes and pumice powder, depending on the desired effect.
